Boss encounters & bait

Last reviewed:

THE SHORT ANSWER

How to Fish has 6 story boss encounters across the 5 island hubs (the Volcano finale plays out in two phases) and 5 optional mini-bosses that are summoned by purchasable Boss Lures.

More context

The story lineup in order is Spider Crab (Lighthouse), Giant Piranha (Forest), Pufferfish (Desert), Albatross (Rocks), Bowhead Whale (Volcano), and Mutated Bowhead Whale (Volcano finale). The mini-bosses are Sunfish and The Old Pike (Forest, Beginner Boss Lure $40), Blue Shark (Desert, Standard Boss Lure $280), Tuna (Rocks, Professional Boss Lure $1,200), and Goblin Shark (Volcano, Scientific Boss Lure $5,800). Patch 1.0.12 added the explosive-on-tail damage fix that lets explosives register hits on the Mutated Bowhead Whale's tail; before 1.0.12, many players were stuck mid-finale because explosives landing on the tail did not count. Recommended weapon tier scales with island order; Boss HP and exact damage numbers beyond what the public walkthroughs state are not announced as of 2026-09-08.

How to Fish boss lineup by island

How to Fish ships with a 6-boss story lineup that mirrors the 5-island progression described on the Steam store page and in the public walkthroughs at how2fish.wiki, howtofish.pro, allthings.how, and nerdschalk.com. Each main Boss sits at the island gate and blocks forward progress until defeated; the Volcano finale then plays out as two phases (Bowhead Whale, then Mutated Bowhead Whale) so the campaign has six named encounters on the way to the credits.

The 6-boss story lineup

The roster in order is Spider Crab (Lighthouse Island), Giant Piranha (Forest Island), Pufferfish (Desert Island), Albatross (Rocks Island), Bowhead Whale (Volcano Island), and Mutated Bowhead Whale (Volcano Island finale). The pufferfish is the Desert Island gate Boss per how2fish.wiki and howtofish.pro, not the Forest Island gate; Forest Island is the Giant Piranha fight. Five mini-bosses (Sunfish, The Old Pike, Blue Shark, Tuna, Goblin Shark) are optional and summoned by the Boss Lure tiers sold at the shop.

Story bosses: Lighthouse Island and Forest Island

Spider Crab — Lighthouse Island (Island 1)

The Spider Crab is the first story boss and gates the path from the starter island to Forest Island. Bait is the empty Beer Can, fed to the lighthouse keeper and returned as a working lure. The recommended weapon tier is knife (sharpen to roughly 20 damage per the allthings.how walkthrough), and the trophy is the Spider Crab meat, which is handed back to the lighthouse keeper for the boat keys and the Radar unlock.

Giant Piranha — Forest Island (Island 2)

The Giant Piranha is the Forest Island gate Boss. Bait is the Leech Bait dropped by the Forest Island lady NPC after the three-leech catch quest, and the recommended weapon tier is gun with explosive splash for the escort wave. The trophy is the Giant Piranha skeleton (valued at $11,000 in the nerdschalk walkthrough), handed in to the Forest Island lady for the Desert Island coordinates.

Story bosses: Desert Island and Rocks Island

Pufferfish — Desert Island (Island 3)

The Pufferfish is the Desert Island gate Boss per how2fish.wiki and howtofish.pro. Bait is the Carrot given to you by the Tourist NPC after you complete the endangered-creature catch step. The recommended weapon tier is gun with sniper as the upgrade path, and the trophy is the Pufferfish tail or skeleton, handed in to the Tourist / Grillmaster NPC for the Rocks Island coordinates.

Albatross (Terrorizing Bird) — Rocks Island (Island 4)

The Albatross, also called the Terrorizing Bird, is the Rocks Island gate Boss. Bait is a Tuna body placed on the grass (not a rod-caught Tuna) and the encounter requires the Professional Boss Lure tier. The recommended weapon tier is sniper rifle (about $3,800 plus scope per how2fish.wiki), and the trophy is the bird head, handed in to the scared islanders for the Volcano Island coordinates.

Story bosses: Volcano Island two-phase finale

Bowhead Whale — Volcano Island (Island 5, phase 1)

The Bowhead Whale is the Volcano Island pre-finale boss. Bait is the Fish Bucket obtained from the Volcano Island scientist NPC after catching five Volcano-native fish on the Scientific Lure. The recommended weapon tier is maxed assault rifle with full attachments (per the nerdschalk ending route), and the trophy is the Bowhead Whale body, which is kept rather than handed in.

Mutated Bowhead Whale — Volcano Island (Island 5, finale)

The Mutated Bowhead Whale is the Volcano finale and the campaign cap. Bait is the Bowhead Whale body thrown into the volcano crater to mutate it. The recommended weapon tier stays at maxed assault rifle plus attachments, and the trophy is the Whale Fin, handed in to the hazmat-suit scientist NPC for the military boat (RHIB) keys that start the credits. Patch 1.0.12 added the explosive-on-tail damage fix that lets explosives register hits on the Mutated Bowhead Whale's tail; before 1.0.12, explosives that landed on the tail did not count, which left many players unable to finish the fight even on the maxed assault rifle tier. If you are running the finale on a save that pre-dates the patch, update to 1.0.12 first and confirm the build version matches the Steam launch build listed on the How to Fish updates page. Specific HP and damage values for either Volcano phase are not announced as of 2026-09-08.

Mini-bosses and Boss Lure tiers

How to Fish has 5 optional mini-bosses that are summoned by purchasable Boss Lures; the lure is consumed when the mini-boss spawns. The lure tiers, prices, and mini-bosses per island (per how2fish.wiki) are:

  • Forest Island: Sunfish and The Old Pike — Beginner Boss Lure, $40 each.
  • Desert Island: Blue Shark — Standard Boss Lure, $280 (body is carried to the Grillmaster).
  • Rocks Island: Tuna — Professional Boss Lure, $1,200 (the Tuna body itself starts the Albatross story encounter on Rocks Island).
  • Volcano Island: Goblin Shark — Scientific Boss Lure, $5,800.
Mini-boss role in the campaign

Mini-bosses are optional and not required to clear the per-island gate, so they sit alongside the 6 story bosses rather than in the main progression path. The Tuna is the bridge between mini-boss and story boss because its body is the bait for the Rocks Island Albatross; catching it on the Professional Boss Lure is what unlocks the Terrorizing Bird encounter per allthings.how.

Recommended weapon tier by island

The weapon upgrade path runs fists to knife to gun to sniper rifle to explosives, and the recommended Boss tier maps roughly one tier ahead of the current island's normal tier. Lighthouse accepts knife and gun; Forest accepts gun and explosive; Desert wants gun with sniper as the upgrade target; Rocks wants sniper with explosives ready; Volcano wants the maxed assault rifle tier plus attachments (and explosives as the natural upgrade above it) for the two-phase finale.

Island gate unlock pattern

Each defeated story Boss drops the gate key that opens the next island, so the unlock order is Spider Crab → Forest, Giant Piranha → Desert, Pufferfish → Rocks, Albatross → Volcano, Bowhead Whale → Mutated Bowhead Whale → credits. Once cleared, the Boss does not respawn during the same run, and the unlock is permanent for that save file. Co-op runs let the gate clear credit to the whole crew, so a 4-player party can stagger aggro and revive during the trick shot phases.
